In Ohio, dog attacks / bites are governed by statute. There is strict liability against the dog owner. The Ohio Revised Code states that a dog may be killed for certain acts; owner liable for damages.
Pursuant to O.R.C Section 955.28(B)
The owner, keeper, or harborer of a dog is liable in damages for any injury, death, or loss to person or property that is caused by the dog, unless the injury, death, or loss was caused to the person or property of an individual who, at the time, was committing or attempting to commit a trespass or other criminal offense on the property of the owner, keeper, or harborer, or was committing or attempting to commit a criminal offense against any person, or was teasing, tormenting, or abusing the dog on the owner’s, keeper’s, or harborer’s property.

Recall of Delta Enterprise Crib Re-Announced After Second Infant Death

The 2008 recall of Delta Enterprise drop-side cribs with “Crib Trigger Lock and Safety Peg” hardware has been re-announced after the discovery of a second infant death in 2009. The crib was re-assembled without safety pegs, and the 7-month-old girl suffocated after she became entrapped between the detached drop-side and the mattress of her crib. The crib’s drop-side rails can disengage from the track without the safety pegs, creating a space in which the infant can become entrapped and suffocate. The re-announcement involves more than 985,000 cribs “sold at major retail stores including Kmart, Target and Walmart between January 1995 and December 2005.” PR Newswire, PR Newswire 03/22/2011

Scotch Corporation Instant Power Toilet Bowl Restorer Recalled

The Scotch Corporation has voluntarily recalled their Instant Power Toilet Bowl Restorer after reports that the product may leak from the cap when the bottle is turned on its side. Contact with the cleaner poses a risk of chemical burns and “irritation to the skin and eyes.” Seven reports of leaking bottles have been received, but no injuries have been reported. Mazda Recalled Vehicles over Spider Web Issues

Mazda has issued a recall of 52,000 cars after it was discovered a small spider that is attracted to the smell of gasoline may build its webs in the vehicle’s emissions system. The recall affects the company’s Mazda6 line, which has two pipes coming out of its gas line, producing a smell strong enough to attract the spider but not kill it. The build-up of webs in the emission systems could lead to fuel tank cracks and possible leaks, the company reported. John Crawley , Reuters 03/04/2011

Ford Recalls Vehicles to Fix Fire Risks

Ford Motors has issued a recall of 35,000 trucks and crossover vehicles due to potential fuel leaks and electrical problems that can cause fires. The recall covers the Ford Ranger and Edge, the Lincoln MKXF-150, F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks. Fred Meier, USA Today 03/03/2011

Ohioans – Make sure you request uninsured/underinsured coverage in your auto insurance policy !

Just a quick FYI – Ohio passed legislation a few years ago which allows insurance companies to sell you car insurance without specifically asking you if you want coverage for uninsured/underinsured motor vehicle protection. This was a significant and detrimental change in the law.

If you do not ask for this coverage, you will not get it. Most people driving either do not have auto insurance or get state minimum coverage of $12,500. To make sure you are protected if you get slammed by someone who doesn’t have enough insurance to cover your injuries, you need the protection of uninsured/underinsured motor vehicle coverage.

Discuss this and your needs with your insurance agent, but make sure you know what you have purchased. Also, find out how little the premium is for this important feature of your policy.

Remember, liability insurance does not cover you if you are hit by an at-fault uninsured or underinsured driver.
